Federation of Associations of Single Mothers
Who we are
Federación de Asociaciones de Madres Solteras (Federation of Associations of Single Mothers) is an independent non-profit organization funded in 1994.
It was created with the contribution of several broadly-experienced associations with shared goals like the recognition, support, promotion and visibilization of single-mother families.
Our work
Federación de Asociaciones de Madres Solteras (FAMS) seeks to give full support to the member associations through social intervention programs and activities for promoting and protecting single-mother families.
We want to…
- Improve the quality of life of single mothers and their children.
- Fight against the idea of single-mother family as feminization of poverty.
- Facilitate the reconciliation of work and family life, enjoying fee time.
- Promote actions to change and/or improve social benefits and legislation.
- Encourage the union of single mothers and single-mother families.
- Strengthening the association tissue and the already-existing networks.
Our suggestions for improvement
As it is visible in the available data about the single-mother families’ situation, we can state that they require several services and support urgently.
FAMS settles the following areas of first importance:
- Housing: favoring access to accommodation and promoting social housing, with priority for single-mother families.
- Education: larger number of vacancies for children between 0 and 3 years old and priority for the access of single mothers’ sons and daughters.
- Employment: development of measures in order to guarantee access to the labor market and economic and social development, with special focus on single maternity and child care.
- Reconciliation of work, private and family life: establishing specific measures to encourage the access to the labor market of single mothers.
- Fiscal policy: taxation is not neutral. It reflects the traditional-family society that it is based on. This is why more measures are needed to guarantee a taxation system to better serve the current familiar diversity.
- Social services: development and consolidation of social services with the purpose of assuring access to basic, individual and universal benefits on equal terms for all types of families.
- Health care: improving health care and defining specific programs to improve mental and physical health of women and children.
- Single-parent family law: FAMS, with all its associations and other similar organizations seeks the elaboration of a single-parent family law, in order to provide these families with more security, recognition and social protection.
