Opañel Women
Mujeres Opañel (Opañel Women) is a NGO, funded in the early 1990s to support human rights and equal opportunities. Broadly experienced, it has been taken as professional model in the contexts of Social Intervention, Immigration, Employment, Equal Opportunities and Family and Children.
People are our main value and our interest to improve the quality of the services that we provide led us to achieve the European certification of commitment to excellence (Model EFQM).
Our mission consists of providing resources and services for social welfare, by integrating diversity, incorporating gender perspective and prioritizing women and socially-disadvantaged men. This integral monitoring will boost their autonomy and personal promotion and subsequently improve of their quality of life.
Mujeres Opañel is an organization that defends the following principles:
Compromise with improving society, with helping vulnerable people and with changing society in order to make it more equal.
Respect women’s autonomy and decision making, since it is their freedom and their capacities the ones that will determine their future lives and their families’.
Professionalism when developing an integral interdisciplinary intervention, seeking equality, respect to diversity and uniting ethical and scientific codes for each specialty.
Constant improvement of their activities, work methodologies, social dialogue, economic management and knowledge.
Networking and finding strategic alliances with Public and Private Institutions that share similar goals and objectives, both nationally and internationally.
Our internal activities are targeted to members of the organization in the following fields:
- Social. Focusing on improving socially-disadvantaged women’s life quality in personal, familiar and social aspects.
- Employment. Promoting women’s participation in the economic environment, i.e. management of economic resources. This will contribute to their social recognition, a better negotiating position, higher capacity for decision making and hence to their level of autonomy.
- Immigration. Addressing all negative aspects concerning the immigrant condition such as: legal instability, ethnical prejudice, lack of awareness of the social environment, lack of natural networks, cultural differences…Special mention here should be done to the aid to immigrant women, very often responsible for the economic support of their families (either in Spain or in their countries of origin). These commonly suffer of unfavorable conditions that derive from migration such as loneliness and estrangement with the aggravated conditions settled by gender discrimination.
- Family intervention. Seeking a better social integration and improving the quality of life of the immigrant families through a dual-focused intervention. On the one hand modifying negative aspects and on the other hand anticipating risk situations, in coordination with schools, by developing specific itineraries for each family.
- Gender issues and equality. Fomenting visibilization and valuability of the feminine identity, not only in the economic and political empowerment of women but also in its application to an inclusive model of citizenship: essential for achieving Real Equality.
